Surapaneni Medals; Boys Team 4th, Sets NCS Mark

November 26, 2016 - California Interscholastic State Championships - Woodward Park, Fresno - Senior Anirudh Surapaneni capped off his brilliant Dublin High School cross country career in grand fashion, medaling in 6th place with a time of 15:26 and leading the way for the Boys Team 4th place in the most competitive team race of the day in the Division 2 race (they were a mere 19 points away from making the podium!).  He was joined by teammates juniors Gaurav Phanse (27th - 15:53) and Adrian Schroeder (28th - 15:53); sophomores Hunter Lampi (115th - 16:34), Kyle Morrison (154th - 16:59) and Loic Scomparin (30th - 15:54); and freshman Christopher Middleton-Pearson (132nd - 16:49).  It was a very historic day for the Gaels:

  1. The team time of 79:35 is the fastest time ever by a North Coast Section team at the State Championships and is the 2nd fastest time and NCS team has ever run at Woodward Park, trailing only their own 79:18 performance at the Clovis Invitational earlier this season.  The previous record was 79:45 by Campolindo in 2008.

  2. Their 4th place finish was the highest a DHS team has ever finished, eclipsing the 7th place finish in Division 4 in 1999.  It was also the highest finish an NCS team has finished since Petaluma’s 2nd place in 2007.

  3. The team was easily the most improved team in the state.  After beginning the season being ranked 56th in the State, the boys ended up 11th in the combined results and was the only team in the top 30 that didn’t make it to State the previous season.

  4. Surapaneni became only the 3rd Gael ever to make the podium, joining James Attarian (1st - 15:17 - 2007) and Jeremy Grace (8th - 15:45 - 2007) and trailing only Attarian’s 15:17 on the DHS State Championships all-time list.  He also became the first Gael to compete in 3 cross country State Championships, breaking the tie with Shelby Nickles who competed in 2009 and 2010.  He is now tied with track and field athlete Mecca McGlaston for competing in his 4th overall State Championship (he qualified in the 3200 in 2016) for most State Championships competed in.

Boys Team Champions,

Set NCS Team Time Record

October 8, 2016 - Clovis Invitational - Woodward Park Fresno - Running on the same course as the California Interscholastic Federation state championships, the boys relished the moment and made history in the process.  They won the Division 2 race in commanding fashion, winning by 66 points for the second week in a row.  But that wasn’t the most impressive achievement - their team time of 79:18.8 broke the North Coast Section record of 79:40 by Petaluma in 2008 at this hallowed course, which has hosted every state championship since 1987.  To gauge how well they ran as a team, their time was good for 4th overall (out of 200+ schools!) throughout the day and only 50 seconds behind the defending NATIONAL champion Great Oak.  Senior Anirudh Surapaneni shared the lead with less than 100 meters to go and was able to manage a 3rd place finish with a time of 15:24.6 over the 5000 meter course.  He was followed by medalists juniors Adrian Schroeder (4th - 15:30.9) and Gaurav Phanse (12th - 15:57.6) and sophomore Loic Scomparin (18th - 16:02.5).  Finishing out the historic scoring five was sophomore Hunter Lampi (16:23.2) followed by freshman Christopher Middleton-Pearson (16:27.9) and junior Noah Goldfarb (16:48.7).  The Varsity Girls continues to show they are one of the most improved programs in the state, taking 9th in a field of nearly 40 teams.  Senior Keili Prenton (19:53.6 - 1:23 improvement vs. ’15) and sophomore Maya Gurusiddaiah (20:14.3 - 2:23 improvement vs. ’15) led the improvement brigade.  The Frosh/Soph boys team also enjoyed some hardware, winning a plaque for taking 3rd.  They were led by individual medalists freshmen Rohan Fonseca (20th - 17:05.6) and Ishaan Jain (27th - 17:12.2) and sophomore Kyle Morrison (28th - 17:12.8).  Rounding out there team were sophomores Yash Dhillon (17:45.6) and Ryan Savellano (17:49.2) and freshmen Darren Furtado (17:49.2) and Matthew Kang (17:21.4).  Also medaling for the Gaels were junior Trevor Chapman (3rd - 16:32.8) and senior Matthew Koay (8th - 16:46.6) in the Division 1 & 2 Junior Varsity Boys Race.  Clovis Complete Results (Division 2)    Team Clovis DyeStatCal Interview
