Boys Top NCS D2 Team, 5th Overall NCS Team, PRs All Around!

November 29, 2014 - CIF State Championships - Woodward Park, Fresno -  Running in their first State Championships as a team since 1999, the boys team showed no fear nor panic recovering from a slow start to gain ground on their North Coast Section rivals at the grandest stage of them all.  Every single member set either a seasonal and or personal record at the Woodward Park 5000 meter course, showing great poise at the most competitive race of the year.  Leading the way were seniors David Yeshiwas (16:20) and Zachary Schmidt (16:21), both finishing in the top 100.  Continuing to show their great team depth and helping keep their ever more important team spread under one minute (final tally was fifty seconds!) was sophomore Anirudh Surapaneni (16:40) and juniors Quinn Heinbaugh (17:08) and Anders Colwell (17:10).  Rounding out the team and gaining valuable experience for the future was freshman Cole Heinbaugh (17:12) and junior Grant Lemen (18:10).  Here are some interesting statistics from this historic team on this amazing day:
  1. After taking 2nd place at the NCS Championships in Division 2, they leap frogged the 1st place team Casa Grande by nearly 50 points to take the top NCS spot in Division 2 at State.

  2. When the dust settled at the NCS Championships, the boys team was 7th overall among the combined results of all divisions.  After the State Championships, they moved up to 5th, sliding past Casa Grande and Las Lomas in the process.  The only teams that were ahead of them were Bishop O’Dowd (NCS D3 runner-ups, 10th @ State), Campolindo (NCS D3 champion, 9th @ State), De La Salle (NCS D1 champion, 10th @ State) and St. Joseph Notre Dame (NCS D5 champion, 2nd @ State).

  3. Their team time of 83:39 was over a minute better than the only other Dublin High School team to ever qualify for the State Championships.  The ’99 team ran 85:00 and featured the likes of Francisco Gomez, owner of our team sponsor The Fit Potato, and were coached by current DHS librarian Glen Walder.

Boys 2nd, State Meet Bound!  Yeshiwas Medals in 7th

November 22, 2014 - NCS Championships - Hayward High School, Hayward - The forecast all week promised a high chance of rain for Saturdays NCS Finals, and the morning lived up to its promise. What started out as a steady rain soon turned the Hayward High School 3 mile cross country course into a muddy mess.  Luckily, the Division II boys were the first race of the day, and what a race it was.  As the gun went off promptly at 8:30am, the Dublin High School boys team began their race with the knowledge that they could make school history.  After a year full of struggles, triumphs, and more struggles, the rag-tag team of boys became closer than ever.  All of the work, all of the drama, it was now going to be tested on the ultimate stage.  Given the condition of the course, all thoughts of personal records were out the window.  The first mile showed the Dublin team in decent position, but the runners would need to move up over the next two-miles if they hoped to make their run to State.  Through blinding rain, treacherous footing, and wood chips on the course that were best described as "LIES" and "TRAPS" the race continued.  Senior David Yeshiwas remained in fantastic position throughout the race, proving to the team, and to himself, that he was a top-level runner, medaling in 7th place with a time of 16:15 which was good for 11th All-Time and the #6 Senior performance at the Hayward High School course. Likewise, sophomore Anirudh Surapaneni (16:23 - #15 AT & #2 Sophomore) and freshman Cole Heinbaugh (17:03 - #4 Freshman) ran competitive races as true underclassmen, proving that Dublin would be a team to look at for years to come.  But a complete team effort would be needed to fulfill their place with destiny, and they got it from senior Zachary Schmidt (16:34 - #11 Senior) and juniors Anders Colwell (17:04), Quinn Heinbaugh (17:30) and Grant Lemen (18:07).  As the boys finished, coaches and spectators hypothesized the team's fate.  Would they be the first Dublin boys team since 1999 to make it to the state meet?  Would the team make it to Woodward Park for the first time in 15 years, a time older than some of the boys running in the race?!  As the coaches were tending to the girl's team, the news was announced.  Second Place.  The boys team is going to be making the trip to the state meet.  Their team time performance was good for 3rd All-Time, even under terrible conditions.  The girls race was the third race of the day.  The course, once best described as muddy, was now a disaster.  With a few quick words of encouragement from the boys team, including which spots to watch for, the girls were ready to race.  The varsity girls team was made up of 3 underclassmen, and the code word for the race was "terrified."  The girls overcame their fear, and a restart of the race, to run in a race with very high-level teams, also running to the 3rd fastest team time in DHS history.  Gabby Gamboa (19:36 - #8 AT & #3 Junior) nearly became an individual to go to the state meet when she ran 19:36 on the tough and muddy course.  Sophomore Keili Prenton (20:53 - #9 Sophomore) and freshman Evie Morehead (21:01 - #7 Freshman) both ran in their first, of many I am sure, NCS races, running 20:53 and 21:01.  The girls showed great promise for the upcoming years.  Rounding out the historic day for the Gaels were senior Sruthi Veeragandham (23:02 - #14 Senior), juniors Jessica Bouchard (21:22 - #12 Junior) and Nicole Chen (21:38), and freshman Angela Huang (21:40 - #11 Freshman).  The coaching staff would like to give a special thanks to all of the Parents and Alumni that came out on a day of terrible weather to watch a terrific group of kids run. The support that you show for the Dublin High School Cross Country Program is what makes this job so enjoyable.  The team's success is also your success.  The number of former-athletes returning to cheer on their old team was inspiring.  Thank you all so much.   NCS Complete Results    NCS Dublin Results    NCS Evaluation Form    Hayward High School All-Time List (updated 11/22/14)    NCS 1999 Results    OneDublin.org Article

Lemen JV 3.0 Champion, Leads JV Team to Victory

October 18 - Mariner Invitational - Hayward High School, Hayward - Dublin showed up to the Mariner Invite with several of their runners missing the race to take the PSAT test.  The smaller than average group showed up to the race ready to prove that, even with a large portion of the team missing, Dublin had the depth needed to make a strong showing. The day started off with am impressive run from the Dublin JV Boys team.  Grant Lemen proved he was back from injury and illness with a winning time of 17:35.  The rest of the Dublin boys followed suit and Dublin had 7 runners in the top 10 of the race.  Another stand out from the JV Boys race was Freshman Brian Patterson, running under 19 minutes with a time of 18:40 and finishing in the top 5 for the race. The Varsity Girls team was lead by the two freshmen Evvie Morehead and Angela Huang, running 20:47 and 21:06 respectively.  These times also put the two runners at #5 and #7 all time for Dublin Freshman Girls.  Having freshmen this far up on the team shows great promise for the Dublin Girls Cross Country program both this year, and into the future.  The Varsity boys finished up the day with a second place finish as a team.  Senior David Yeshiwas had a stand out day, getting 7th overall and running an impressive time of 15:44.  Dublin walked away from the Mariner Invite with 16 Medals and the knowledge that Dublin has the depth it needs to go far as a team.  Mariner Complete Results    Mariner Dublin Results    Mariner Evaluation Form    Hayward High School All-Time List (updated 10/18/14)

8 Medalists, Boys Teams All Finish Top 12

October 10 & 11 - Clovis Invitational - Woodward Park, Fresno - 12:15 PM - Clovis is always one of the largest meets in the nation, and this year was no different.  The tough 5000 meter course is the official course for the State meet, meaning the Clovis Invite draws teams that are looking to get some practice on the biggest stage in California.  Dublin left Clovis with 8 medals and several new PRs for the course.  The weather was warm and dry, making the times slower for everyone, but the competition form across the state made for some heated battles.  The Varsity girls started out the race, and once again, junior Gabby Gamboa lead the team, placing 11th over all and running 19:42, including a 6 minute first mile.  Senior Sruthi Veeragandham ran a strong race, running 23:06.  The Varsity boys were next, and with one of the top runners missing because of the SATs, the team needed to come together as a family if they really wanted to race.  Sophomore Anirudh Surapaneni continued his weekly improvement and placed second for the team and 26th overall, earning himself a medal and a time of 16:41.  The Frosh Soph Girls were running on their first ever 5K course, and despite extreme nervousness at the beginning of the race, both Keili Prenton and Angela Huang medaled, running very impressive times of 21:49 and 22:33 respectively.  In the Boys F/S race, Sophomore Tiger Huang attacked the race, coming through the mile split in 5:22 and finishing in 18:12, earning him a 12th place medal.  Gaurav Phanse also ran well, breaking 19 for 5k and running an 18:43.  In the boys JV race, both Trent Wakaluk and Rei Echizenya medaled, getting 19th and 27th respectively.  Anthony Casasos ran a 21:57, breaking 22 minutes for the 5K course.  Clovis Dublin Results    Clovis Complete Results    Clovis Evaluation Form

October 1, 2014 - DFAL Center Meet #1 - Hidden Valley Park, Martinez - 3:30 PM - The DFAL center meet found Dublin High Schol Cross Country returning to the course they started the season with.  The only difference, the Varsity had to do three miles this time.  Starting with the Frosh/Soph boys, Dublin ran for an impressive second place as a team.  Sophomore Matt Koay improved his two-mile time on the course by 19 seconds, running a 11:43 over the tough course and coming in 5th for the race.  Matt was followed closely by Raphy Gamoba, who improved his time on the course by 10 seconds, running 11:47.  Saahil Shangle continues to impress, improving his two mile time by 25 seconds on the Hidden Valley course, coming in fifth for the team with a time of 11:55. Another notable improvement for this course came from sophomore Brandon Brunkhorst, who improved his time over 30 seconds from the previous race on the same course, running 14:11.  On the F/S girls side, Jasmine Feng improved her course time by over 1:30 and Keili Prenton finished fourth over all in her race with a time of 13:56.  Boys JV got third over all, with a strong improvement by Junior Rei Echizenya, who improved his time on the course by over 30 seconds, running a 12:08.  In the Varsity Girls race, Junior Gabby Gamboa almost broke 20 minutes on the tough course, and managed to earn 8th place over all in her race with a time of 20:03  In the Varsity boys race, the boys faced a very strong team from Campo.  The boys finshed 2nd overall as a team, and were lead by Zach Schmidt, who won the race in a time of 16:10.  Anirudh Surapaneni continued his steady improvement, running a 17:12 and taking 4th for the team, right behind Anders Colwell with a time of 17:10.  DFAL #1 Complete Results    DFAL #1 Dublin Results    DFAL #1 Evaluation Form

September 20, 2014 - Farmer Invitational - Hayward High School, Hayward - 9:30 AM - The Farmer Invitational offered a chance for Dublin to run on an important course and allowed more athletes than usual to compete at the 3 mile distance.  Before the longer races began, the day was started with a Freshman 2 mile that saw Saahil Shangle run 11:24, the #8 all-time FS over that distance.  The JV boys 2 mile was a packed event. But despite the large field, DHS still walked away with 6 t-shirts, with the top 5 for that team all coming within the top 13 of the entire field.  Shout out to Max Ureta getting 8th over all and dropping 1:26 from the previous two-mile race on the same course.  Rei Echizenya also got a t-shirt and dropped nearly a minute and a half from his previous race on the same course.  The first three-mile race of the day also brought the biggest smile to the DHS coaches.  Sruthi Veeragandham not only came back from injury, she came back with attitude, running 22:30, a personal best. Jasmine Feng also ran in the same race, running her first 3-mile race ever.  Jasmine, while simultaneously setting a personal best in both the 3-mile AND 2-mile in the same race.  Finishing up the girls JV 3-mile, Aleia Villanueva ALSO had a huge personal best of 24:03 and won a t-shirt.  Next up was the JV boys 3 mile, where DHS showed the true depth of their boys team.  The top 6 boys all finished within the top 15 of the race, dominating the race and winning first place as a team.  Stand outs of the race include Marcel Henry getting 6th place over all, winning a t-shirt, and running 17:39.  Brian Patterson ran his first 3-mile race ever and finished in an impressive freshman time of 18:39.  Varisty Girls were next, and the girls team was ready to prove that this was their year.  The team set a DHS team-time RECORD of 1:41:49. Leading the team and showing great tactical knowledge, Gabby Gamboa finished 2nd overall, and broke 19 minutes for the first time, running 18:56.  Freshman Evvie Morehead continued her improvement getting second for the team and running an impressive first 3-mile race at 20:39.  Additional shout out to Angela Huang who ran her first Varsity race ever, and stepped up big time when the coaches needed her.  The Varsity boys finished up the day, and despite not finishing on top like they wished, there were still come impressive times.  DJ Sweeney ran a tough race and stepped up big time when his team needed him most, running a personal best of 16:27. Quinn Heinbaugh, despite a slow start, moved up very well and ran an impressive time of 16:39.  And Cole Heinbaugh, despite running in his first 3-mile race EVER, ran a very fast 16:54, putting his mark on the current varsity team, and the team for years to come.  Coach Williams held it down solo for the coach's race, improving on his two-mile time.  Coach Kleinow chose not to compete so that the epic battle himself and coach Nick could continue at a later date.    Farmer Dublin Results    Farmer Complete Results (there are mistakes)    Farmer Evaluation Form    Hayward High School All-Time List (updated 10/18/14)    Balkirat Sahota Farmer Video

September 13, 2014 - Ed Sias Invitational - Hidden Valley Park, Martinez - 8:30 AM - Despite a new course, exceptionally large field of schools, and treacherous footing, Dublin High XC left the Ed Sias Invitational with a 5 medals, a team plaque, and a lot of amazing early-season times.  The stage was set early Saturday morning as teams entered Hidden Valley Park.  Teams from all over Northern California arrived, fielding a larger field than ever before seen at the Ed Sias Invitational.  The course, due to recent maintenance, had been altered, and the questioned loomed large in the thoughts of all the runners.  Would the new course be faster or slower?  Would the heat become a factor?  Would anyone fall down the hill?  Would Coach Kleinow beat Coach Nick?  (No!)  As the day progressed, we saw a Dublin team emerge from a long summer of training.  This team proved more than capable.  The successes started early with an amazing race from the Freshman Boys squad.  Led by Trevor Chapman (11:47 and 3rd place) the team of newcomers proved the depth of the Dublin team by having two more runners (Brian Patterson and Saahil Shangle)  run under 12:30.  The look into Dublin's depth continued with Grant Lemen running an impressive race in 11:58, and Malik Peay running his first distance race ever in a  time of 13:03.  Cole Heignbaugh proved a force to be reckoned with by running a time of (11:12) which made him our number 4 runner on the guys team overall.  Sophomore Trent Wakaluk also ran a strong time of 11:58, making a statement that he is not going to let the new Freshman get all the glory.  A strong JV team is a sign of a team with great potential, and the Dublin JV boys did not disappoint.  Both Nikhil Gurusiddaiah and Max Ureta received top 10 finisher medals and ran impressive races, finishing 4th and 6th respectively.  Finishing up the boys races was the Varsity Boys.  The Boys went into the race with the hopes of making a statement.  With a spread of only 0:44 seconds separating our number one and our number 5 man, Dublin XC proved they are not a team to be overlooked.  The Varsity boys, led by Zach Schmidt (10:33) and winning a 4th place medal, won the race overall, beating some very important and illustrious teams along the way.  The whole team received medals and bags, and the team plaque will be hanging in Coach Kleinow's room. The girls XC team has grown significantly this year, and Ed Sias was the start of an exciting chapter in Dublin XC women's history.  With over SEVEN girls running their first cross country race ever, it was time to test the abilities of the new squad.  Veteran Gabby Gamboa ran an impressive 13:00, proving she was ready to run with the best. Former sprinter turned Cross Country runner Jessie Bouchard ran an impressive first cross country race in a time of 13:59, proving that she could, indeed, race longer than 200 meters.  Annalisa Watson (14:05) proved she was not going to let anyone take her hard-earned spot on the Varsity team.  Freshman Evelyn Morehead (14:27) overcame her fear of the starting gun to run a very solid first HS level cross country race.   A great day of racing to start of a great season of cross country.   Go Gaels!!    Ed Sias Complete Results & Videos    Ed Sias Dublin Results    Ed Sias Evaluation Form
