Boys 6th, Best Finish Since 1999; Girls 7th, Best Finish...EVER!

November 17, 2012 - North Coast Section Championships - Hayward High School, Hayward - Even in terrible conditions, the Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team still found a way to make history on the biggest stage in Northern California.  The Boys Team finished 6th, which was the best finish by a Gaels team since 1999, the only team ever to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships.  They were led by sophomore Zachary Schmidt, whose time of 16:42 was good enough for 12th All-Time and 3rd All-Time Sophomore.  His 12th place finish was one spot away from qualifying for State!  Other members of this team were senior Kenneth Ainslie (17:28 - #12 Senior), juniors Garrett Garcia (17:27 - #8 Junior) and Ryland Lyons (17:45 - #9 Junior), sophomore David Yeshiwas (17:50 - #12 Sophomore), and freshmen Anders Colwell (17:58 - #4 Freshman) and Davis Zamboanga (18:01 - #5 Freshman).  Not be to outdone, however, was the Girls Team, whose 7th place finish was the highest finish ever for a girls team in DHS history!  Freshman sensation Gabrielle Gamboa led the way, placing 11th with a time of 20:04 (#10 AT & #3 Freshman), which was also one spot away from qualifying for State!  Also etching their names into the record books were juniors Jillian Colwell (21:19 - #5 Junior) and Abigail Sweeney (23:14 - #14 Junior); sophomores Karina Gurusiddaiah (21:41 - #7 Sophomore), Sruthi Veeragandham (25:30) and Annalisa Watson (21:47 - #9 Sophomore - 2:00 improvement vs. 2011); and freshman Montana Nielson (22:37 - #8 Freshman - 1:00 improvement vs. Farmers Invitational).  Congratulations Gaels on a great finish to a historic season!  Dublin NCS Results    Complete NCS Results    Hayward High School All-Time List

**Frosh/Soph Boys DFAL Champions!**

*Colwell & Schmidt 2nd Team All-DFAL; Register, Watson & Zamboanga Medal*

November 3, 2012 - DFAL Championships - Hidden Valley Park, Martinez - Kicking off the postseason in grand fashion, the Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team wrapped up one team title, had two members make the All-DFAL team and three more medal!  Sophomore Annalisa Watson got the hardware collecting started in the first race of the afternoon, taking 6th in 14:15.9 over the 2.0 miles course in the Frosh/Soph Girls Race.  With three of their regular members running up on varsity, the Frosh/Soph Boys had their work cut out for them and needed everyone to step up to win the league title outright.  Since they were first in the dual meet season, they needed to only take second to win the DFAL championship.  Did they ever rise to the occasion!  Freshman Davis Zamboanga (5th - 11:23.8) and sophomore Matthew Register (7th - 11:36.9) finished in the top 10 for medals to lead their team to a second place finish.  Sophomore Goutham Marimuthu (11:57.7) and freshmen Rei Echizenya (12:19.0), Marcel Henry (13:04.4), Grant Lemen (12:06.5) and Daniel Sweeney (12:05.0) all were scoring members of the championship team.  In her first race in nearly two months, junior Jillian Colwell took 11th in the varsity girls race, covering the 3.0 miles course in 20:08.0 and making the 2nd Team All-DFAL for the second consecutive year.  Sophomore Zachary Schmidt (16:37.0) also made 2nd Team All-DFAL by taking 11th in the varsity boys race, which was also the fastest time of any sophomore in the DFAL!  Dublin DFAL Championships Results    Complete DFAL Championships Results    William Hearne DFAL Photos

October 24, 2012 - DFAL Center Meet - Hidden Valley Park, Martinez - In their second race in six days and their final tuneup before the DFAL Championships at the site where it will all go down, the Gaels showed major gains and had several solid efforts in another fantastic performance.  Running on the same 2.0 mile course as the Ed Sias Invitational from early September, sophomore Zachary Schmidt defended his victory from the first DFAL center meet, going to wire to wire with a time of 11:07.  Classmates David Yeshiwas (6th - 11:30.6) and Matthew Register (10th - 11:42.4 - 1:01 improvement from ESI) and freshmen Anders Colwell (3rd - 11:22.4 - 0:17 improvement from ESI) and Davis Zamboanga (8th - 11:32.3 - 1:06 improvement from ESI) all enjoyed top ten finishes and helped the team to a second place finish.  Freshman Ira Villanueva (15:23.9) gutted out a more than two minute improvement from ESI on a sprained ankle no less!  Freshman Gabrielle Gamboa also defended her win from the first DFAL center meet, winning with a time of 13:14.6, 0:23 better than ESI.  Helping their team to a second place finish were sophomores Annalisa Watson (5th - 14:06.2 - 1:05 improvement from ESI) and Karina Gurusiddaiah (9th - 14:21.7 - 0:29 improvement from ESI).  Another freshman had a significant improvement from ESI - Montana Nielson (14:42.7) improved by 1:32.  Dublin DFAL #2 Results    DFAL #2 Complete Results    William Hearne DFAL #2 Photos

Lee Leads JV Boys to Victory; F/S Boys 2nd; 14 Medal

October 19, 2012 - Monterey Bay Invitational - Toro County Park, Salinas - Proving that their North Coast Section Division 2 ranking was no fluke, the Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team traveled to the Central Coast Section championship course and showed they could hold their own against anyone.  Junior Thomas Lee got the day started out in winning fashion, winning the Mens Junior Varsity Race with a time of 18:21 over the 3 mile course.  But that was just the beginning for this team - seniors Lam Dang (13th - 19:04), John Henry (15th - 19:07) and Mitch Kless (8th - 18:49), and junior Balkirat Sahota (6th - 18:40) all also medaled and were solid contributors to their winning the race by more than a commanding 30 points!  Seniors Ryan Durflinger (19:48) and Feroez Chinkonsung (19:53) rounded out the victorious team.  But they weren’t the only team making the medal stand - the Frosh/Soph Boys Team, running without their top four who were up on varsity, still managed to pull out a 2nd place showing.  They were lead by medalists sophomore Goutham Marimuthu (4th - 17:51) and freshmen Rei Echizenya (28th - 19:06), Grant Lemen (26th - 19:00), Daniel Sweeney (12th - 18:28) and Davis Zamboanga (9th - 18:15).  Also contributing on the scoring seven were freshmen Quinn Heinbaugh (19:26) and Marcel Henry (20:30).  The Mens Varsity Team just missed the medal stand in fourth place, but still had senior Kenneth Ainslie (17:15), junior Garrett Garcia (25th - 17:18) and sophomore Zachary Schmidt (13th - 16:59) medal.  Rounding out the hardware for the Gaels was freshman phenom Gabrielle Gamboa, who took 7th in the Womens Varsity Race with a fine time of 20:02.  Dublin Monterey Bay Results    Complete Monterey Bay Results    William Hearne Monterey Bay Photos

September 22, 2012 - Farmer Invitational - Hayward High School, Hayward - Running in their second race in four days, the Dublin Gaels had another historic performance at the site of the North Coast Section Championships at the Farmer Invitational at Hayward High School in Hayward.  In the Frosh/Soph Girls race, sophomore Aleia Villanueva (17:12) had the best improvement from those who competed in 2011, shaving off 1:34 from her previous best.  The Frosh/Soph Boys Team, fresh off their DFAL winner on Wednesday, were led by sophomore medalist
