Clovis Cross Country Invitational

Woodward Park, Fresno

October 10, 2009

The Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team made the most out of their team overnight trip to the Clovis Cross Country Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, competing at the same course as the CIF State Championships.  Racing against over 150 high schools from California and Nevada, the Gaels continue to bring home hardware with two more individuals medaling and the Freshman/Sophomore Boys Team taking a very respectable 7th place.  Many of the runners were running in their first race of the 5000 meter distance, while two of those Gaels were racing in their first races ever!

Highlights

In only her second race of the season and the first time she really got to test her fitness, junior Shelby Nickles medaled in 15th place with a fine time of 20:08 in the Division 3 Varsity Girls race.  Classmate Ariel Graykowski continues to be the most consistent force for the girls team, running an outstanding 20:58 and nearly medaling herself in taking 31st.  For the Varsity Boys Team, junior Eric Yun ran his first sub-6 minute pace of the season with a good time of 18:06.  Sophomore Shirley Chen missed her 2nd medal of the year by a handful of spots, taking 32nd and running 23:13.  Teammate Ardine Balili ran in her first race for the Gaels, running 28:34.  The Freshman/Sophomore Boys Team continues to show that they will be a force over the next few years, taking 7th in a very competitive race.  Freshman Alex Ott won his 3rd race in a row, breaking the 17-minute barrier in the process (16:57).  Sophomore Matthew Sy (18:49) ran very well, nearly medaling in 25th place while freshman Nathan Lederer shaved off over a minute off of his mile pace from his previous race 10 days earlier, and that race only covered two miles!  Fellow freshman Ryan Durflinger made his seasonal debut for the Gaels, running 25:25.  Senior Deanna Hong ran 26:29 in the Junior Varsity Girls race after coming straight out of taking her SATs.

2009 Diablo Foothill Athletic League Championships

Hidden Valley Park, Martinez

November 7, 2009

In the biggest race of the season, the Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team saved their best for last at the Diablo Foothill Athletic League Championships at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez.  For the second year in a row, the Varsity Girls Team is home to another 1st Team All-DFAL member and another historic run while the future is looking very bright for the freshman class as every one of them ran their best races of the season and featured a 2nd Team All-DFAL member.  In all, 29 of 36 Gaels ran their best race of the year when it counted the most!

Highlights

After winning her first race of the year versus a great Acalanes team last week, junior Shelby Nickles proved that she is one of the best runners in all of the DFAL.  Her 3rd place finish was the highest a lady Gael has ever finished in the DFAL Championships and was good enough for her second consecutive 1st Team All-DFAL, also a Dublin first for a girl.  Nickles’ time of 19:18.3 was also well over a minute better than she ran here last year.  Also showing tremendous improvement in the Varsity Girls Race was senior Jaclyn Liu (25:38.2), who ran over two and a half minutes better than her 2008 performance.  The Varsity Boys Team had a very special performance by freshman Alex Ott, who was running in only his second varsity race ever.  His 11th place finish in 16:31.9 was good for 2nd Team All-DFAL, a first for a freshman in Dublin history.  Junior Eric Yun (17:51.7) continues to show great improvement from last year, running a better mile pace by 36 seconds and that was compared to his two-mile race pace last year.  In the Frosh Soph Boys Race, all but one member ran their best race of the season at Hidden Valley Park.  Freshman Kenneth Ainslie just missed a medal, breaking 12 minutes for the first time running 13th in 11:54.3 while sophomore teammate Matthew Sy (19th – 12:02.9) ran over a minute and a half faster than 2008.  The Frosh Soph Girls Team also featured some great improvers.  Sophomore Shirley Chen (17th – 15:19.7) ran nearly a minute faster per mile than 2008 and freshman Robyn Rowell (20:15.9) improved her Hidden Valley Park time by over two minutes!

DFAL Meet vs. Acalanes & Miramonte

Dublin High School, Dublin

October 28, 2009

Coming to the end of their year, the Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team is definitely tuning up for the championship season in grand fashion.  In their Diablo Foothill Athletic League meet versus Acalanes High School and Miramonte High School, the host Gaels had their first varsity winner of the season as well as three other top five finishers.  The most impressive thing, however, might have been that 25 of the 30 Dublin runners ran their fastest mile pace of the year, including the entire Frosh/Soph Boys Team!

Highlights

In the varsity girls race, junior Shelby Nickles did not back down from the tough pack of the Dons from Acalanes, pulling ahead at the two-mile mark and never looking back.  She won with a very fast time of 17:49, which was 1:45 minutes faster than she ran here last year.  Senior teammate Jaclyn Liu (24:19) also showed major improvement from last year, running over a minute and a half faster.  The Varsity Boys Team were led by freshman phenom Alex Ott, who never backed down from the lead pack and racing a very competitive 5th place in a wonderful time of 15:11.  Junior teammate Eric Yun (16:35) ran 41 seconds per mile faster than he did here last year, and that was over the 1.88 mile course.  In the frosh/soph girls race, sophomore Shirley Chen (5th – 13:15) continues her fantastic season with her 4th top 10 finish of the year.  Of the Gaels who ran here in 2008, she showed the greatest improvement of all by shaving off over 2 minutes!  Freshman teammate Robyn Rowell (18:08) improved her mile pace by 1:39 minutes.  The Frosh/Soph Boys Team were led by freshman Kenneth Ainslie (3rd – 10:39), who had his third top 10 finish of the year while classmate Ryan Durflinger (13:09) ran over a minute faster than his best pace from this season.  What was so remarkable about this race was that EVERY member of the Frosh/Soph Boys Team ran their fastest mile pace of the year!

DFAL Meet vs. Acalanes, Alhambra & Las Lomas

Hidden Valley Park, Martinez

October 14, 2009

With the majority of the Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team taking it “easy” at the DFAL meet versus Acalanes, Alhambra and Las Lomas at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez, some of the Gaels still found a way to show improvement to kick off the second half of their racing season.  Recovering from their team trip to the Clovis Invitational just this past weekend, one lady still found her way into the top 10 while five members improved from their weekend paces and one ran in his first race ever.

Highlights

In the Frosh/Soph Girls race, sophomore Shirley Chen ran her second consecutive top 10 finish in DFAL competition, taking 9th in 15:55.  Classmate Kaila Stephens (19:39) ran nearly 30 seconds faster per mile than her pace just four days prior.  The Frosh/Soph Boys Team saw their newest member of the team lead their performance.  Freshman Louis Catiller (13:39) ran his first race for the Gaels and raced very well.  Four of the members of this team also ran a faster mile pace than Clovis – sophomore Justin Austin (15:10) and freshmen Justin Johnson (15:32), Ryan Durflinger (16:08) and Michael Sanchez (17:03).
