2008 DFAL Championships

Hidden Valley Park, Martinez

November 8, 2008

In what is turning out to be a very historic season, the Dublin Gaels Cross Country Team sent shockwaves through the rest of the league at the Diablo Foothill Athletic League Championships at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez.  The Varsity Girls Team gets hotter by the week, taking 4th place while missing 2nd place by only 5 points!  The team also featured 4 girls making the All-DFAL team.  What was very impressive was the fact that every runner improved their mile paces from their two previous races at Hidden Valley Park (9/13 and 9/24) when all the pressure was on the line.

Highlights

As league champion Campolindo found out a week earlier, the DFAL was put on notice that the Dublin Gaels Varsity Girls Team is for real.  Taking 4th place in the super competitive DFAL is very good, but more astounding than that is only two points ahead of them was Las Lomas, who is currently ranked 3rd in the North Coast Section Division 3.  They were led by 1st Team All-DFAL members senior Jennifer Kaehms (9th – 20:35.3) and sophomore Shelby Nickles (10th – 20:37.2) followed by 2nd Team All-DFAL members sophomores Nadia Saenz (12th – 20:47.6) and Ariel Graykowski (19th – 21:10.2).  Gutting it out on a sprained ankle was freshman Joanna Giron (21:50.9), who continues to close the gap making this team very lethal.  Freshman Shirley Chen (25:10.9) and juniors Deanna Hong (27:06) and Jaclyn Liu (28:11.4) rounded out this amazing performance.  The Frosh Soph Boys Team took 6th place and only was 4 points behind Miramonte, which beat us by 23 in a dual meet format a little over a month ago.  Sophomore Alex Nolan (11th – 11:53.4) set the tone for a great showing for the young Gaels.  Freshman Jennifer Vazquez improved her mile pace by over 5 minutes from her race on 9/24 while junior Shawn Hampton saved his best race of the year for last as he improved his pace by nearly 2 minutes!
